What is breast ultrasound?
Breast ultrasound — medically known as sonography, i.e., an ultrasonic (USG) examination of the breasts — is a painless imaging procedure for the breast gland and adjacent lymph nodes. It does not use X-ray radiation, making it suitable for young women and pregnant patients, and can be repeated without concern. Ultrasound clearly visualizes the gland’s structure, distinguishes cysts from solid lesions, and assesses axillary lymph nodes. In our radiology center in Bratislava, the examination is performed by a radiologist specializing in breast diagnostics.
When to have a breast ultrasound
- You have felt a lump or thickening in your breast,
- You experience pain, nipple discharge, or skin changes,
- You have dense glandular tissue and mammography alone is insufficient,
- Breast cancer has occurred in your family,
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding and mammography is not performed,
- You want to check breast implants after augmentation,
- Preventive check-up — especially for women under 40.
Sonography or mammography?
These are not competing examinations; they complement each other. For women under 40, sonography is the primary imaging method for the breasts. From age 40 onwards, every woman is entitled to a screening mammogram covered by insurance every two years; this remains the priority method, with ultrasound serving as an adjunct, for example in cases of dense glandular tissue or when further imaging of a finding is needed. During the examination, we will advise you on how to reasonably schedule both procedures.
How the examination proceeds
The examination takes 15–20 minutes. You lie on your back while the radiologist moves the probe with gel over both breasts and axillary lymph nodes. No special preparation is required, and you do not need a doctor’s referral — you can book directly. You will receive the results and report immediately after the examination, and the doctor will explain the findings in an understandable way; if additional examinations are needed, we will schedule the next steps right away.

Frequently Asked Questions
Potrebujem žiadanku alebo výmenný lístok?
Nie.
Nijako. Nemusíte byť nalačno a nič si vopred nezháňate; ak máte staršie snímky alebo popisy, vezmite ich so sebou.
Bolí vyšetrenie? Je bezpečné?
Nebolí a nepoužíva röntgenové žiarenie, iba ultrazvuk.
Lekárka vám nález popíše, zrozumiteľne vysvetlí a odporučí ďalší postup.
