The initial neurological examination is a clinical assessment in which the neurologist evaluates how the nervous system functions: the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. It does not require any equipment; the doctor examines you using their hands and simple tools. At Medirad in Bratislava, this service is provided by MUDr. Katarína Sitárová and MUDr. Richard Zubaľ.
How the examination proceeds
It begins with a discussion about your symptoms, their progression, and the medications you are taking. The neurologist then assesses posture and gait, the spine, muscle strength, sensitivity, coordination, balance, and reflexes. Based on the results of these tests, the specific part of the nervous system that is not functioning correctly can be identified.
What is included in the price and what is not
The fee of 125 € covers the consultation, which includes the discussion, clinical examination, and a conclusion with recommendations for further steps.
If the neurologist determines that EMG or ultrasound of the peripheral nerves is needed, these are separate examinations with their own fees. The same applies to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is provided by partner facilities. The doctor will explain exactly what they recommend and why during the consultation.
What the clinical examination shows and what it does not
The neurologist assesses function, not anatomy. The examination can reveal that and where the nervous system is malfunctioning, but it does not show the structure of the brain or spinal cord. For that, imaging diagnostics are used, which the doctor prescribes based on their findings during the examination.
